ABOUT CANIS MAJOR DOG TRAINING AND OUR OBEDIENCE PROGRAMS

Mackey Kelly is the owner of Canis Major and has been leading the charge since 1995. Mackey worked 10 years at the Lakewood K9 Academy in Norman, Oklahoma, learning the art of police dog training from Rick Maynord and Mackey has now accumulated 40 years of dog training experience. Mackey just recently retired from law enforcement and the training of police K9s and is devoting all efforts to the obedience dog business. With the help of 7 part time employees, the kennel operates 7 days a week for training and boarding.

Gold Medal Training Program

Our Gold Metal Training Program is our top of the line program. The dogs are brought in and trained for a 7 week period. We teach the dogs the commands then take them into public venues where they learn to negotiate distractions. We work on correcting as many bad habits (jumping up, barking, etc.) as possible while the dog is with us.

We hold a school at approximately 4 weeks into the program so you can see your dogs progress. A video is supplied so any time the owners need to review the handling techniques that were taught in the school, it will be available to them .

Silver Medal Training Program

Our Silver Medal Training Program is an abbreviated version of the Gold Medal Program. It is a 4 week training program and the dog is taught the same obedience commands but less time is spent on working the dog in distractions and correcting bad habits. The benefits are: (1) the dog spends less time away from its owner when training at the Canis Major facility, (2) it is less expensive than the 7 week program. The down side is it requires you to work more with your dog to make up for the extra 3 weeks that the dog misses by not being in the Gold Metal Program. We hold a handlers school at the end of the 4 week program. A video is supplied so any time the owners need to review the handling techniques that were taught in the school, it will be available to them .

THE STORY OF BAILEY

After the passing of their comfort dog Miriam, the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in King Fisher, Oklahoma contacted me regarding the training of a new comfort dog for their Church. I accepted the challenge and was very fortunate that God sent me a dog, through one of my previous obedience clients, that was the most perfect training prospect one could hope to find for this endeavor. Bailey showed up and what a wonderful dog she was to work with. To top it all off, her handlers were so gifted and well schooled that the entire project fit together seamlessly. I am so proud of Bailey, my trainers, and Bailey's handlers and I love knowing that she will supply Gods comfort to many souls over her life's journey.
