ABOUT US

Origin and Purpose

Canis Major "The Great Dog Training Company"  was established in 1992 for the purpose of producing trained canines for Police Departments  and instructing handlers in the deployment of those canines. Canines are trained in the following categories: obedience-narcotics detection-apprehension and man tracking.. Canis Major also trains  private sector dogs for obedience,  then schools the handlers in how to maintain the dogs' trained functions.  We are a pro-American company -God Bless the USA-

Mission

To provide well trained Canines and instill prospective handlers with the necessary skills needed for deploying K9s in public service or for a person in the private sector to manage a personally owned canine.

Mackey Kelly -Owner

I am the founder and owner of Canis Major and have trained dogs since 1980 and still actively train and instruct clients. I first worked for Rick Maynord at Lakewood K9 Academy in Norman where I learned the art of dog training from Rick and helped school canine handlers from 1980 to 1990.I formed  Canis Major in 1992 and in 1995 moved the  company to Minco, Oklahoma where the business is currently operating. I have numerous award winning dogs that I co- trained with Rick, some in USPCA competition and some I trained later on with the Oklahoma Narcotics Enforcers Organization.  I am a CLEET Certified Reserve Officer for the Mountain View Police Department in Mountain View, Oklahoma. 

CLEET ACCREDITED SCHOOLING

For the past 15 years, our schools have been taught by Keith Ingle and his contribution to the program is held in high regard. 

  • Keith is currently undersheriff  for Carter County  Sheriffs Office and was Captain with the Ardmore Police Department.He has been in law enforcement for over twenty years 
  • He was a K9 Handler for Ardmore PD for five years and K9 Unit Supervisor for the last fifteen years. 
  • Is a Narcotics Detection Canine Certifier for the State of Oklahoma.
  • 8 years in Narcotics at the Ardmore PD - Five of those years as a Supervisor.
  • Keith and his K9 Ricki were recipients of Oklahoma Narcotics Enforcers 2005-2006 K9 Team of the Year for the State. 
  • Recipient of K9 Team of the Year for Region 4 in 2005-2006 and again in 2007-2008. 
  • A certified CLEET Instructor and has Advanced Instructor training.
  • Has trained both canines and officers in Narcotics Detection, Apprehension and Tracking as well as K9 Tactile Deployment and Arson Detection.
  • Received Training from the DEA in Quantico, Virginia and has trained all over the USA.




OBEDIENCE TRAINING

HAS YOUR DOG LOST HIS MANNERS AND JUST CAN'T SEEM TO FIND THEM ????

For private individuals we offer Obedience training for their canine companion(s). The dogs are brought in and trained for a 7 week period. We teach the dogs the commands then take them into public venues where they  learn to negotiate distractions. We also address as many general control issues as we can  before the dogs return home. We hold a school so the owner will be able to use and maintain the dogs' new trained talents. A video is supplied so  any time the owners need to review the handling techniques that were taught in the school, it will be available to them .
